Lift Pump
A lift pump (or sump lift pump) is a submersible pump used to move wastewater from a low-elevation collection point upward to a higher elevation in the drain or sewer system. In commercial applications, lift pumps handle drainage from below-grade areas such as basement kitchens, underground parking drains, or mechanical rooms where gravity drainage to the sewer is impossible because the sewer main is above the floor elevation.
Lift pump systems include a wet well (collection sump), one or more submersible pumps, float switches to control pump activation, and an alarm system for high-water conditions. Commercial lift pumps handle significantly higher flow rates and more demanding operating conditions than residential septic pumps. They require regular inspection, scheduled maintenance, and prompt repair when failures occur — a failed lift pump in a commercial kitchen or parking garage can cause significant water damage and operational disruption.
What This Means for You
If your facility has lift pumps serving below-grade drains, include them in your preventive maintenance program. Float switch failures and pump seal deterioration are common and predictable; catching them before a pump failure prevents emergency shutdowns.
