Cleanout

A cleanout is a capped pipe fitting installed in a sewer or drain line that provides direct access for cleaning, inspection, and clearing blockages without disassembling plumbing fixtures. Cleanouts are typically located outside the home near the foundation, in crawl spaces, in basements, and at changes in direction of the drain system. They are capped with a removable plug that allows a snake, jetting hose, or camera to be inserted directly into the line.

Modern plumbing codes require cleanouts at regular intervals on sewer lines and at changes in direction. Older homes often lack cleanouts entirely, making service calls more time-consuming and expensive. If your home has accessible cleanouts, keeping their locations known (and ensuring the caps are not overgrown, painted over, or covered) saves time and cost every time a drain service is needed.

What This Means for You

Know where your sewer line cleanout is located — typically a capped PVC or cast iron fitting near the exterior wall of your home or in your basement. When you call for drain service, having the cleanout accessible saves the technician time and can reduce your service cost. If your home doesn't have a cleanout, ask about having one added during your next service call.
