Overflowing Septic Tank Caused by Corroded Outlet Line – Hastings, MN

 · Hastings, Dakota County, MN  · Overflowing Septic Tank

Problem

This residential septic system in the Hastings area has a 1,000-gallon septic tank that was completely full and overflowing from the top of the tank. Inspection found that the old cast-iron outlet line running from the septic tank toward the distribution box had corroded shut, preventing wastewater from properly leaving the tank. Roots were also found growing into the outlet baffle and restricting the outlet area.

Solution

We pumped the overflowing 1,000-gallon septic tank to relieve the immediate backup and inspected the outlet area to determine why the system was not draining properly. Roots were found in the outlet baffle, and the existing cast-iron line between the septic tank and distribution box was found to be severely corroded and plugged. The failed cast-iron outlet line will need to be replaced to restore proper flow from the septic tank to the drainfield distribution system.
