Problem

This property has a 1,500-gallon two-compartment septic tank followed by a 1,000-gallon pump tank equipped with a Goulds PE51 effluent pump. The system also includes an effluent filter on the outlet of the second septic tank before wastewater enters the pump tank and is delivered to an elevated trench drainfield. A unique feature of this installation is the tank depth. The tanks are approximately 7 feet below grade. They were installed this deep so the home's basement plumbing could gravity-flow to the septic system without requiring a sewage ejector pump in the basement. While this design eliminates the need for an indoor sewage ejector, the tradeoff is considerably deeper septic tanks, making proper access and routine maintenance especially important.

Solution

Minnesota Sewer Pros performed routine maintenance pumping of the complete septic system using approximately 75 feet of vacuum hose from the truck to the tanks. We pumped the 1,500-gallon two-compartment septic tank and the 1,000-gallon pump tank. The system's effluent filter is located at the outlet of the second septic tank and helps prevent larger suspended solids from continuing downstream into the pump tank and elevated trench system. The 1,000-gallon pump tank uses a Goulds PE51 effluent pump to deliver wastewater to the elevated trench drainfield. Because these tanks are approximately 7 feet deep, this system is a good example of an installation designed around basement plumbing elevation. Installing the tanks deeper allowed gravity flow from the basement and avoided the need for a sewage ejector pump inside the home, but it also makes future septic-system access and maintenance more challenging.
